Chrome for Android beta adds desktop view

The Chrome for Android update includes an option to request the desktop version of a web site Google has released a new beta version of its Chrome web browser for Android-based smartphones and tablets, adding a number of features requested by users. The Chrome for Android update – labelled 0.18.4409.2396 and based on Chrome 18.0.1025.133 – now allows users to request the desktop version of a web site instead of a mobile version by selecting the "Request desktop site" option from the settings menu.

The new version of the mobile browser beta includes support for 31 additional languages and, for quick access to specific web sites, bookmarks can be added to a home screen as a shortcut. Additionally, users can now choose which apps open when clicking on certain links. This can be useful when, for example, using an email client other than GMail, as email links can now be associated with another program.

For users who have a proxy setup for their Wi-Fi access, Chrome for Android can now use the system proxy configured in Android settings. Other changes include the ability to download files directly to the device, support for country-specific suggested search engines and YouTube playback in the native app for embedded content, as well as support for complex text layout and right to left text on pages.
