The Google Chrome development team has released version 10.0.648.11 of its WebKit-based web browser into the Chrome developer channel (a.k.a. the Dev channel). Aimed at developers and early adopters, version 10.0.648.11 of Chrome features the long-awaited addition of password syncing support.

While the abilities to sync bookmarks, apps, extensions, preferences and autofill have been available for some time, the long awaited option to sync passwords has not. Now, users running the latest dev channel build can enable the feature via Chrome's Preferences, Personal Stuff, and Sync. The private data can be encrypted using either a user's Google Account password or a custom sync passphrase. Now that the feature has been included in the Dev channel, it should then eventually make its way into the beta channel and finally into the stable branch in the coming months.

Commenters on the release announcement blog post note that users updating to the release will have their flags reset (located under "about:flags", previously "about:labs") – the about:flags section allows users to enable or disable experimental features within the Chrome browser.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the dev channel update can be found in the change log. Chrome 10.0.648.11 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Users who currently have the dev version of Chrome installed can use the built-in update function by clicking Tools, selecting About Google Chrome and clicking the Update button. The latest stable branch of Chrome is version 8.0.
