China Mobile joins the Linux Foundation

Linux Foundation Logo The Linux Foundation has announced that China Mobile Communications Corporation, known simply as "China Mobile", has become its newest Gold Member. Founded in April of 2000, China Mobile is the majority shareholder of China Mobile Ltd, the world’s largest telecom operator by market value, and the first Chinese enterprise to join The Linux Foundation.

China Mobile Logo According to the Foundation, China Mobile has been investing in Linux through cloud computing developments and with its OPhone mobile operating system. The Foundation has three tiers of membership: Platinum, Gold and Silver. Of the approximately 100 members, there are currently a total of seven Platinum members and ten Gold members including China Mobile. Other Gold members include AMD, Cisco, HP, Google, Motorola, Nokia and Novell.

Discussing the announcement, China Mobile Research Institute General Manager Bill Huang said, "China Mobile recognises The Linux Foundation as the world’s foremost non-profit Linux organisation, the focal point for Linux technology, standardisation and innovation," adding that, "We see enormous value in the open architecture of the Linux system and look forward to contributing to Linux on a global scale".

The Linux Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the task of promoting the growth of Linux. Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, is himself sponsored by the foundation.
