A number of long term members of the Redmine community who work on the open source web-based project management system have announced that they are forking the project to create ChiliProject. Eric Davis, one of the new project's creators, has stated that the aim is not only to provide new features but also to cultivate a transparent development and governance process and expand and diversify the developer community.

The developers cite "management bottlenecks" over the last two years within the Redmine community and a lack of shared priorities with the project manager of Redmine. This led them to conclude that the only way forward was to fork the project and "pledge to uphold the ideals of Free and Open Source Software ethics".

The ChiliProject developers aim to have a first stable release of the Ruby on Rails based application available at the end of February. This release is expected to be fully compatible with Redmine 1.0.5 and, like Redmine, will continue to be under the GPLv2 licence.
