CentOS logo CentOS has announced the availability of a "continuous release" (CR) package repository for CentOS 5.6. Users can activate the repository by installing a release RPM for x86-32/i386 (direct download) or x86-64/x64 (direct download) systems. All CentOS 5 users are strongly advised to do so, to ensure that they receive packages in the CR repository that fix known bugs and security vulnerabilities.

The packages are based on the source RPMs from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.7, released on July 21. They will also be included in RHEL 5.7 clone CentOS 5.7 which is expected to be released in seven to ten days. Within the next 24 hours, CentOS developers are also planning to add rebuilds of all updates released by Red Hat since the release of RHEL 5.7 to the CR repository.

The CR repository addresses a problem which has been much discussed this year on sites such as LWN.net, namely that CentOS users sometimes have to wait weeks for security fixes following a minor release from Red Hat. The announcement does not indicate whether or not this repository will be available in future versions or whether it will be updated promptly when new versions of RHEL are released. CentOS had previously promised a CR repository for CentOS 6, but there is no sign of one as yet.
