CentOS 6.1 released

The CentOS development team has announced the release of version 6.1 of its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) clone. As with version, 6.0, the developers have taken longer to update their code than Red Hat has needed to issue the next release, 6.2, which was made available last week. However, the CentOS team is catching up: in the summer, the gap was almost two months, and it has now shrunk to only a few days.

The features in CentOS 6.1 are equivalent to those of RHEL 6.1, which was introduced in May. As is usual for CentOS, all Red Hat logos and other trademarked elements have been removed and the developers have merged Red Hat's various repositories to create one upstream repository. The newly created Continuous Release (CR) repository is designed to offer more flexibility in terms of new software packages. In this repository, the project developers provide updated RPMs of software packages that will be part of the next release before it becomes available; these include bugfixes and security updates.

The developers advise users who wish to upgrade from older versions of CentOS to re-install their systems rather than attempt an in-place upgrade from CentOS 4 or CentOS 5.
