After the usual few weeks delay following the release of Red Hat Enterprise 5.2, the CentOS project has released its Red Hat clone – CentOS version 5.2. The new CentOS 5.2 offers the same features as RHEL   5.2, which was released in May. Features include a host of new and improved drivers as well as an updated MAC80211 WLAN stack and performance and stability improvements to the Xen kernel. The kernel continues to be based on Linux version 2.6.18, which was introduced with RHEL 5.0. The project refers users to the Red Hat release notes for an overview of the changes, complementing the notes with a few CentOS specifics.

CentOS is based on and promises full binary compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source code. The distribution is probably the most well-known of the many Red Hat clones and is used in many situations where the functionality of RHEL is required, but the cost involved is prohibitive. There are also a number of companies who provide commercial support for this distribution.

The new release is available as an ISO image for the i386 and x86_64 architectures at various mirror servers. To avoid overloading the HTTP mirrors the project recommends downloading via Bittorrent.
