CentOS The CentOS development team have announced the release of CentOS 4.8, a free Linux distribution based on the source of version 4.8 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The CentOS 4.8 legacy branch release is the eighth update to the CentOS 4 series and features several big fixes, updates and new functionality.

The 4.8 release is expected to be the final normally scheduled Point Release in the Deployment Life Cycle Phase for CentOS 4 that will add support for new hardware. According to the release notes, the final point release, CentOS 4.9, is expected to be available at the beginning of the Maintenance Life Cycle Phase. Users seeking support for new hardware are advised to upgrade to the CentOS 5.x series which is still in the Full Support Phase.

Generally CentOS versions are generally released around four to six weeks after the RHEL versions on which they are based, however, recent versions have taken a little longer. The long delay between the release of RHEL 4.8 from the middle of May and CentOS 4.8 was reportedly due to internal problems within the project, which now seem to be resolved.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes and in the RHEL 4.8 upstream release notes. Users running CentOS 4.0 to 4.7 can update via yum by running yum update. CentOS 4.8 is available to download for i386 and x86-64 architectures.
