CeBIT 2010: Linpus Linux Lite 1.3 for netbooks
At this year's CeBIT in Hannover, Linpus Technologies has announced version 1.3 of their Linpus Linux Lite distribution specifically aimed at Original Equipment and Original Design manufacturers of low-cost hardware, such as netbooks. Linpus Lite is based on the Fedora operating system and supports resolutions as low as 640 by 480 (VGA).
The latest release of Linpus Lite features an updated user interface that includes new icons and allows users to create, arrange and customise tabs to organise their applications and information – applications can be dragged and dropped between tabs or re-arranged in the current tab view. “A netbook has limited screen space and we are always working to allow people to find their applications as quickly as possible,” said Rita Jing, Vice President of Sales at Linpus.
Another new addition to Linpus Lite 1.3 is the inclusion of several personalisation options, including themes to personalise the interface, such as the current design and background. Compiz 3D desktop effects like translucent windows, 3D desktop capabilities, shadow effects, motion effects and animations are also supported.
According to Warren Coles, Linpus Technologies Marketing Director, the new version and its source code should be available on the company's web site by the end of the week. A trial of Linpus Lite 1.2 (a Windows installer that requires Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) is currently available to download. An installation guide and video are also provided. Linpus Lite supports more than 14 languages and is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).
