At this year's CeBIT Open Source Forum, Knoppix creator Klaus Knopper has announced the release of version 6.3 of his popular Live Linux distribution. Knoppix is a bootable CD, DVD or USB Flash drive distribution of Linux, incorporating automatic hardware detection. It can be used to demo Linux, as an educational CD, a rescue system, etc. Knoppix uses on-the-fly decompression, so it can have up to 2 GB of data and software installed on a distribution CD or up to 10 GB of data on a single layer DVD.

Knoppix 6.3 is a special 'CeBIT Edition' that features version 2.6.32.6 of the Linux kernel. The special edition also includes the beta for Google's Chrome web browser, additional drivers for NVIDIA graphics cards and, at the request of Linux Magazine, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash. OpenOffice 3.1.1, Firefox 3.5.6 (in the form of the unbranded Iceweasel), VirtualBox 3.1 and version 1.2 of ADRIANE (Audio Desktop Reference Implementation and Networking Environment) are among the other included applications. ADRIANE is a "a talking menu system, which is supposed to make work and internet access easier for computer beginners, even if they cannot see the computers monitor." The release also includes an enhanced hard disk installer with better partitioning capabilities that copies the contents of the LiveDVD or LiveUSB directly to a hard drive. A minimum of 5 GB is required to copy version 6.3 to a USB flash drive.

According to Knopper, the next version of Knoppix – either 6.3.1 or 6.4 depending upon how many features are added – could be available as soon as the end of March or early April. The release notes for 6.3 have, however, yet to be posted on the distributions web site. Knoppix is released under the GNU General Public License. Knoppix 6.3 will be included in the '2010/4' German issue of Linux Magazine (German language link) and in the English version of Linux Pro Magazine.
