CeBIT 2010: BIND 10 is coming

At this year's CeBIT IT trade show in Hannover, The H spoke with BIND 10 Programme Manager Shane Kerr about the next version of BIND, the most widely used Domain Name System (DNS) server on the Internet. Like BIND 9, BIND 10 is a complete re-design and re-write of the previous version. Development on the BIND 10 project officially began on the 1st of April, 2009.

Version 10 of the open source BIND DNS server will feature a modular design, updated APIs and Libraries, cluster support and integration with existing work flows. Kerr says that the new version will be more customisable, resilient and include better run-time control.

According to Kerr, the first release of BIND 10 will arrive on the 19th of March and will likely be named 'Y1' for year one. BIND 10 Y1 is not intended for production use, but rather for further testing. The developers hope that it will provide the community with a snapshot of the current state of the next generation of BIND.

Kerr also noted that the BIND 10 project is currently looking for sponsors to support BIND 10 DNS server development, as well as additional developers to join the team.
