CD and DVD Burning expert Jörg Schilling has announced that, after over five years, a new stable version of the cdrtools command line media tools package has been made available as a release candidate and that the final release will occur next week. This will be the first stable release since September 2004. Many features have now been added to the open source burning software and the new stable release will make them available to a wider audience. According to Schilling, nearly as much new code has been added to the project as was added in the previous four year period.

The new version's command-line tool cdrecord will include BluRay, DVD double layer and DVD-RAM support, while the readcd command will now support media quality scanning with Plextor and Optiarc drives. Other enhancements include support for reading and writing hidden tracks on audio CDs, enhanced SCSI support and improvements to Mkisofs to handle UTF8 locales and files up to 8TB. Full details of the changes to the dual-licensed CDDL/GPL licensed software are available in a change log.
