Canonical, sponsors of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, have announced the start of a closed beta test for The Ubuntu Font. The font was first shown in the new logo when Canonical launched the rebranded Ubuntu look for Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx. Planned as the default font for Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat, the new font will be free for use and to share. No details of the planned font licence are currently available.

The beta version of the font currently comes only as a regular weight, proportionally spaced font, with mono-spaced versions and other weights, including bold, promised in the future. The font, developed by Bruno Maag, was discussed at the Ubuntu Developer Summit earlier in the year and slidesPDF from the presentation show how the font is evolving. A wider public beta test of the Ubuntu Font is due to begin on August 8th.
