Ubuntu logo Canonical and the Ubuntu developers have announced the release Ubuntu 10.04.4, the fourth maintenance release of updated installation media for the long-term supported release of the Linux distribution. This is the last planned update to the installation media and updates the desktop, server and alternate installation CDs and DVDs for i386 and amd64 architectures. In future, security updates will be individually downloadable from the Ubuntu archives.

The most notable change is that Firefox has been updated to Firefox 9 and will track Mozilla's rapid release updates. That change was planned and applied in software updates in January, and the release of 10.04.4 now offers new installation media with that change in place.

The maintenance release also includes all security fixes published on the Ubuntu Security Notices page and a variety of bug fixes for installation, booting and upgrading, as well as improved support in the kernel for some hardware. There are also desktop bug fixes for Ubuntu and Kubuntu desktop installations, including added hardware support for some media players. Alongside a number of bug fixes for server and cloud installations, PostgreSQL has been updated to version 8.4.10.

The LTS version of Ubuntu 10.04 is supported for three years for desktop releases and five years for server releases; from Ubuntu 12.04 onwards, LTS support will be for five years on both desktop and server. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will continue to receive maintenance updates and security fixes until April 2013 on desktops and April 2015 on servers. Standard releases provide 18 months of updates for both the desktop and server versions; the current standard release is Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneric Ocelot" from the end of October. The next LTS release is Ubuntu 12.04, due in April.

A full list of fixes and upgraded packages is available in the Change Summary. Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS is available to download for both servers and desktops from the project's site.
