Canonical Logo At this year's Lotusphere in Orlando, Canonical, founder and sponsor of the Ubuntu project, has announced the launch of a dedicated support program for Lotus Symphony. The IBM Client for Smart Work (ICSW) consists of Lotus application components running with the current long term support version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition. With Symphony as the core application suite, ICSW features support for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. Bob Sutor, VP Linux and Open Source at IBM said, "We have seen tremendous interest in this solution since we launched it initially in Africa and more recently in the United States". IBM and Canonical introduced a ICSW desktop package in September in Africa and October in the United States. IBM also offer a version of ICSW based on Red Hat.

The move from Canonical allows the company's partners to offer a complete support package, from operating system to applications. Canonical are positioning the Ubuntu-based ICSW as an alternative to Windows 7, saying that many organisations are currently considering their upgrade options. Steve George, VP of Sales and Product Management, Corporate Services at Canonical said "With IBM we are slashing the costs to business for their basic productivity suite,". Based on a 1,000 seat deployment, Canonical will provide support for this open standards-based core solution for $5.50 per user. The IBM Client for Smart Work for Ubuntu is available to download for no charge from the Canonical ICSW partners page as a DVD ISO or as a USB image file.
