Canonical announces integrated cloud service for Dell US servers

Canonical has announced that Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) is to be available pre-installed on Dell PowerEdge C2100 and C6100 servers sold to Dell's US customers. This integrated cloud solution allows easy deployment of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The Dell PowerEdge C servers will ship with tested reference architectures and an implementation guide, and will have support from Dell and Canonical.

The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud is based on Eucalyptus, an open-source software platform that implements IaaS-style cloud computing using existing Linux-based infrastructure. Mårten Mickos, CEO, Eucalyptus Systems, comments that "The integration and availability of UEC on Dell servers will be ideal for the growing number of organizations that are building new consumer-facing cloud services and need cloud-ready servers. We are pleased that the Eucalyptus private cloud software, as part of the UEC, will now impact an even broader market."

Mickos says that one of the main ideas behind private clouds is to make computing more agile, and these Dell-UEC boxes take this agility benefit to the next level. Because Eucalyptus implements the same API as Amazon Web Services (AWS), workloads can easily be moved between a private cloud and AWS.

Eucalyptus is extremely active in the cloud market and has followed a policy of forming strategic partnerships with other open source based companies.
