Camino logo The developers of the Camino web browser for Mac OS X have announced that the Mozilla based browser will be getting phishing and malware protection in the next major version, Camino 2. The new features were added to the nightly builds of the browser a week ago. In a posting on the Camino blog the developers said that the features had been under development since March 2008 and had undergone many design changes over that time.

The malware protection uses Google's Safe Browsing service. Camino 2 does not send information to Google, but will periodically download hashes of potentially malicious web sites from Google and then check locally if a requested URL matches the hashes. Camino is available under the MPL/LGPL/GPL tri-license and the nightly build of Camino 2 can be downloaded from the Camino "Contribute" page under the nightly builds section.
