Zoom KF8 conversion in calibre 0.8.50

The open source ebook management software calibre has been updated to enable it to convert books to Amazon's Kindle Format 8 (KF8). Official support for the AZW3 plugin which handles these conversions was introduced in calibre 0.8.50 and works with the newer versions of the Kindle ebook reader such as the fourth generation Kindle, Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch.

The AZW3 plugin can convert books to pure KF8 and users can tweak the output to manually optimise it. Calibre has been able to read KF8 books (if they are DRM-free) since version 0.8.48, which was released in April. KF8 is Amazon's successor to the MOBI format, which the Kindle ebook readers have used since their introduction into the market. KF8 is said to be more flexible than the older format, integrating many capabilities from HTML5 and CSS3 relevant to ebook creation.

Calibre is a cross-platform ebook management program that was created by David Goyal in 2006 and has become a popular way for users to manage their books and synchronise them with reader devices like the Kindle. Calibre is licensed under the GPLv3 and is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. More information on new features in version 0.8.50 can be found in the application's change log.
