Mozilla has released a major feature update to Bugzilla with a new 3.2 version. This new release of the MPL licensed, web based, issue tracker sees a major refresh to the user interface, thanks to assistance from the NASA Human-Computer Interaction department who worked with the new Bugzilla UI team. The result of this work is a heavily redesigned bug editing form and a new default skin named "Dusk".

Other enhancements, beyond the UI, include a customisable list of issue status and the ability to configure the transitions from one status to another and whether a comment is required on certain transitions. New field types now allow for large multi-line blocks of text, multiple selection fields and there is a date/time field which comes with a JavaScript calendar widget for easier date picking.

Oracle support arrives in 3.2, albeit in an experimental form, and although the Bugzilla project does not recommend the use of proprietary databases with their open source project, they thank Oracle for "their extensive development contributions to Bugzilla which allowed this to happen".

Other changes in the Perl based application are documented in the release notes, which also include details on how to upgrade existing Bugzilla installations. Users who want to experiment with Bugzilla without installing it can use LandFill, the Bugzilla test server.

The Bugzilla team are now laying out a roadmap to Bugzilla 4.0, which will incorporate better internal communication between Bugzilla users and more integration. As these features could take some time to develop, the team has comitted to doing time based releases, every two months, for the 3.x series. That release schedule is described as an experiment and the Bugzilla developers reserve the right to change it if it doesn't work.

Another consequence of the Bugzilla 3.2 release is that Bugzilla 2.20 has reached its end of life and the developers strongly recommend users of 2.20 upgrade to 3.2.
