Brendan Eich takes control of Mozilla engineering

Brendan Eich, CTO of Mozilla, has announced that he is now managing the organisation's product and platform engineering teams. Eich's role has expanded from just working on the technical strategy, web standards and research to now also managing the company's engineering focus on Firefox OS, Firefox for Android and desktop Firefox, along with initiatives such as the Persona sign-on system and Web Maker creative tools. Eich has been CTO at Mozilla since 2005 and was one of the original founders. "This is a privilege and an obligation I take seriously," he says of the revised CTO role.

He sees the goal of Mozilla engineering as: "expanding up the stack to fight proprietary lock-in that diminishes developer and user experience," noting that Mozilla did achieve that once before with Firefox in 2004. To achieve that goal, he sees the company not just working on "excellent products", but also making them successful by partnering with other organisations. While Eich has control of engineering and is the "buck-stopper" for module ownership and other technical issues, Mitchell Baker, Chairman of the Mozilla Foundation, will continue managing governance conflicts and being "Chief Lizard-Wrangler".
