The makers of the Boxee social media centre announced at the beginning of January that they would only support the recently released version 1.5 until the end of the month. In a few hours, they will follow through and disable the download option for the Windows, Mac OS X and Linux desktop versions. Those who still want to obtain version 1.5 will, therefore, need to be quick.

Boxee Inc. has decided to take this step despite protests from PC users. It will, in future, exclusively gear its media centre towards special set-top boxes such as D-Link's Boxee Box or Iomega TV, as well as networked TVs, smartphones and tablets.

Most recently, the company released Boxee Live TV, a USB tuner that allows users in the US to receive cable TV on their Boxee Boxes. Boxee released an iPad version in August 2011. Like Plex, Boxee is a descendant of the XBMC Media Center open source project, and parts of it continue to be released under the GPLv2.
