An agreement between Microsoft and Black Duck will ensure that open source projects on Microsoft's CodePlex will be included in Black Duck's KnowledgeBase. Since mid 2006, Microsft's source code to it's shared source products has been available through the CodePlex portal.

Black Duck, which produces licensing and compliance management software and related services, collects data from over 200,000 open source projects for its KnowledgeBase, and then analyses the results. The addition of CodePlex hosted projects will bring around 9,000 Windows or .Net based open source projects into Black Duck's analysis. The database is searchable using the Koders search engine, which Black Duck acquired in 2008 and which now uses the metadata from the KnowledgeBase.
