The beta version of Kolab 3 features an editor that allows object types configured in the groupware to be modified via the web administration interface; this includes users, resources and roles. The developers say that newly established package repositories make the groupware easy to install under Debian 7 (Wheezy); various developers are also working on simple installation packages for openSUSE.

Since releasing the alpha version in August, the developers have fixed numerous bugs. A release candidate of Kolab 3 is scheduled to arrive on 11 December, and the final version 3 is due to be released a week later. The current stable version of Kolab is version 2.4 from May.

Source code for Kolab is available from the project's version control system under a combination of open source licences.
