Oracle Berkeley DB Logo Oracle's free embedded Berkeley DB database, like the server database, now carries the version name "11 g Release 2". It is not yet clear why there is large jump in version numbers from 4 to 11, but it may be justified by a new interface: this version of Berkeley DB will be the first to be controllable via SQL statements.

The API is said to be similar to that of the equally free SQLite, which operates in the background of software such as Mac OS X and Adobe's Lightroom. Oracle has announced that all tools for SQLite will also work with Berkeley DB.

Further new features include JDBC and ODBC drivers as well as an Android version of the database. Previous variants were available for Linux, Windows, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, VxWorks and other POSIX operating systems. Berkeley DB 11 g R2 is scheduled to be available to download from the 31st of March.
