Riak CS

Basho has announced Riak Cloud Storage (CS), a new version of the open source Riak NoSQL distributed database for the cloud. The new features of Riak CS are not open source; a Basho spokesperson said that the company "believes users of this capability will be large cloud operators and multi-national enterprises that will require dedicated support".

The new capabilities that are unique to Riak CS include multi-tenancy support with per-tenant visibility reporting, Amazon S3-API compatibility so the system can make use of existing S3 tools and frameworks, and support for arbitrary content items up to 5GB (plus metadata) in size. Riak CS also offers pluggable authentication to allow systems to be integrated with existing authentication infrastructure.

Riak is a database which implements a distributed key/value storage system inspired by Amazon's DynamoPDF. The Apache licensed database includes support for JavaScript and Erlang in its MapReduce engine, uses Bitcask as its default storage but can use Innostore, LevelDB or work in-memory and has drivers for Java, JavaScript, Erlang Python and Ruby.
