Balsam Professional 12.1, a boxed version of openSUSE with installation support and additional packages, is now available. Developed by open-slx, who previously made the "openSUSE box", the new name reflects the company's desire to present itself as its own brand, independent of openSUSE.

Version 12.1 of Balsam Professional is based on the second release candidate of openSUSE 12.1 and is now available in English, including Bolton Linux, at an introductory price of £45. The package includes a double-sided DVD-10 with 32- and 64-bit versions of the operating system and a DVD-9 with add-ons with more than one thousand applications. The distribution includes KDE 4.7 and GNOME 3.2 with a Linux 3.1 kernel and systemd. Also included is KDE Plasma Active One, an environment designed for tablets and other mobile devices which open-slx co-develops.

Users that buy Balsam Professional can make use of 90 day free installation support over phone, email and online chat. Purchasers can also be supported in the installation of the freely available download versions of Balsam Professional which include live versions for USB and DVD media. The bundle does include some propietary software such as Moneyplex finance management, Adobe Reader, Flash Player and the Opera web browser.

Open-slx is develops Balsam Professional with it's own quality assurance process. Updates and extensions are supplied from open-slx's own servers but users can still make use of other repositories. Balsam Professional is independent of openSUSE's release schedule but, say open-slx, remains fully compatible.
