Glow Logo Since late 2007, the BBC has been using a JavaScript library called Glow on bbc.co.uk web sites, intending to release it as open source. Today, in an announcement by Stephen Elphson, Lead Product Manager for Glow at BBC Vision, the corporation is making good on that intention by releasing the JavaScript library under version 2.0 of the Apache Licence.

Elphson says that Glow was developed by the BBC to replace libraries they had used since 1999. These earlier libraries addressed browsers which were no longer in use and the functionality was "fairly primitive". Other libraries were considered, but in the end, the developers decided that their own JavaScript library would be needed to cover the range of browsers that the BBC required.

The Glow library provides a core set of DOM functions, Flash detection and embedding, event and network handing, form validation, animation and drag and drop support. This is complemented with a set of widgets that provide auto-suggestion, scrollable lists, a rich text editor, information panels and overlays, slider controls, sortable elements and a timetable view. The library is available to download from the Glow website and comes complete with API documentation.
