Azul's Zing JVM free for open source developer testing

Azul Systems has announced a new programme for open source developers that will allow them to use its Zing JVM for development, qualification and testing of their open source applications. Zing JVM, which runs on commodity x86 servers, is a heavily optimised Java virtual machine with a high performance, pauseless garbage collection system.

Allowing open source developers to test their applications means that they can push applications further in development. One example given was testing done by Michael McCandless, Apache Lucene committer and PMC member, who explained that using Zing JVM had let them explore large heap scenarios such as holding entire search indexes in memory for faster searches. Where a typical JVM may spend time battling with garbage collection, McCandless says an in-memory test with the full Wikipedia English-language site loaded worked with no garbage collection pauses under Zing JVM, even with a 140GB heap.

The Zing JVM runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, CentOS and Ubuntu. Open source developers who want to make use of the Zing JVM are asked to email zing_oss@azulsystems.com to join the programme. A developer forum is also available. For deployments other than open source application testing, Zing JVM pricing is available on request from Azul.
