Asus is offering a free Software Development Kit (SDK) to anyone who wants to develop software for the Eee PC that is Linux optimised, designed for the small display and integrates well with the simple interface. It contains Xandros Desktop Open Circulation Version 4.5, Qt, Eclipse, the Qt plug-in for Eclipse, and the Xandros assistant for creating Debian packages.

The SDK is provided as a 1.2GB DVD image. It must be installed from DVD, as a either as a bootable copy of Xandros Linux or to run Xandros in a virtual machine such as VMware. Besides the software, documentation for integrating self-developed software into the Eee PC interface, the Asus Launcher, is enclosed with the system.

The user handbook (PDF file), using an address book as an example, shows how to develop software for the Eee PC with Eclipse and use the assistant to bundle it into a install package. It also explains how to install the SDK in VMware.
