Asus plans Android smartphone

Asus is reported to be planning its own smartphone running the Google Android operating system. According to a report from Taiwanese IT news service Digitimes, the currently nameless Linux smartphone should be released in spring 2009. The Android smartphone operating system, developed as a result of a Google initiative by an alliance of telecoms companies, mobile phone manufacturers and software companies, was recently released as open source.

The Asus Android mobile will initially be sold under the Asus name in Taiwan, before potentially being marketed globally as a rebranded product by other distributors. No technical details or pricing for the forthcoming Linux mobile are available at present. Asus has previously kitted out all its mobile phones and PDAs with various versions of Windows Mobile, but has also manufactured mobiles running other operating systems for other vendors – never under its own brand.
