Digium and the Asterisk development team have released version 11.0 of their open source PBX software package. Like version 1.8 from two years ago, Asterisk 11 is a Long Term Support (LTS) release and will be provided with security patches and updates for four years.

While Asterisk 11 is, its developers say, primarily focused on stability and performance, it also includes some new features. Support for WebRTC has been added, enabling browsers to communicate with the telephony application directly over WebSockets. RTP media streams in WebRTC sessions are encrypted using DTLS SRTP.

It is also now possible to establish connections between clients behind network address translators (NATs) and firewalls. Motif, A new channel driver, has been added which supports the XMPP extension Jingle and Google Talk.

An overview of all of the changes and new features can be found in the updated documentation and in the change log. Version 11.0 is available from the Asterisk Downloads page and is dual licensed under the GPLv2 or a commercial licence.
