Archos, the French manufacturer of multimedia tablets, has announcedPDF plans for a portable media device that will run Googles open source Android operating system. The Archos Internet Media Tablet (IMT) is to be a multimedia player with Smartphone capabilities.

The system is to be powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP3440 processor from its new OMAP-3 Platform. It will have a 5 inch touchscreen, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access / High-Speed Uplink Packet Access) telephony and a battery life of over 7 hours while playing back video. The battery doesn't seem to need much room as the IMT will only be 10 mm thick.

Depending on the model, the IMT will hold up to 500GB of data on a built-in hard drive. The built-in browser will also include Adobe Flash playback to allow mobile access to TV, movies, photos, music and games. The Archos Internet Media Tablet is expected to be available in the third quarter of this year.
