Arch Linux The Arch Linux development team has announced the arrival of new installation images for its flexible Linux distribution. Arch Linux 2011.08.19 is the project's first new installation media release in 15 months and is based on the 3.0 Linux kernel.

According to Release Engineer Dieter Plaetinck, the previous 2010.05 release is "quite outdated" and "now yields broken installations" when users perform a netinstall; this is because the old installer does not work with changes introduced in the new Linux 3.0 packages. Updates to the Arch Linux Installation Framework (AIF) include experimental support for the Btrfs and NILFS2 file systems, and support for the SysLinux bootloader, as well as GRUB. Other changes include the addition of support for booting from MEMDISK and various package updates.

Arch Linux is a lightweight Linux distribution for the i686 and x86-64 architectures. It is aimed at Linux users who want to create "their own ideal environment" and install only what they need.

More details about the release, including a list of changes, can be found in the official release announcement. IT is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems; an Official Installation Guide is also provided. Arch Linux and its components are released under a variety of licences.
