Apache Feather+TomEE logo The Apache Software Foundation has announced that Apache TomEE is now certified to be Java EE 6 Web Profile compatible. TomEE is an all Apache-based Java technology stack. It is based on the Apache Tomcat server and includes Apache's OpenWebBeans, OpenEJB, Geronimo JavaMail and Transaction, OpenJPA and MyFaces in the stack. The Foundation bills TomEE as a lightweight scalable stack for use in enterprise-level cloud applications.

According to the announcement, the entire web profile consumes only 24 MB of memory. TomEE passed the TCK (Technology Compatibility Kit) testing with "no additional memory settings beyond the default", apparently a first for Java EE TCK testing. David Blevins, VP of Apache OpenEJB and original co-developer of TomeEE, said the stack would join the Java EE server space to stand alongside GlassFish, JBoss and Apache Geronimo; to date there are only five other certified Java EE implementations. The stack is also certified to run on Amazon EC2 t1.micro, m1.small, m1.large 32-bit images; certification for 64-bit EC2 and other cloud platforms is planned.

The Apache TomEE stack can be downloaded from the project's download page and is, as all Apache Software Foundation projects, licensed under the Apache Licence 2.0.
