The Apache Foundation has released version 1.0 of TomEE (pronounced "Tommy"), an Apache Tomcat variant that adds Java EE (Java Platform, Enterprise Edition) features to the popular Servlet Container. According to the developers, TomEE 1.0 improves the startup time of hosted applications by as much as 300 per cent compared to earlier versions of the software.

Apache TomEE was first announced in October of last year and comprises other Apache technologies such as OpenWebBeans, OpenJPA, Geronimo JavaMail and Transaction, OpenEJB and MyFaces. According to the Apache Foundation, TomEE is a lightweight, enterprise-grade server stack aimed at hosting applications in the cloud. TomEE 1.0 is based on the latest version of Tomcat (v7.0.27) and runs without any additional memory requirements while being fully compatible with most applications and test suites that work with Tomcat.

More information on Apache TomEE 1.0 can be found in the release announcement and on the project's documentation pages. It can be downloaded from the OpenEJB site and is available under the Apache 2.0 licence.
