The RAT project, currently in incubation at Apache, has released version 0.6 of the release auditing tool. Apache Release Audit Tool (RAT) allows Java developers to add a license audit stage to their build processes. RAT then analyses the source code, looking for appropriate licence comments in the files, and produces a report on which files contain which licences and which do not contain a licence, or have an unknown licence.

RAT began life as the Google project arat and has now been placed in incubation at the Apache project. The 0.6 release is the first to be repackaged under the org.apache namespace. Ant tasks and a Maven plug-in are available to make it simple to include verification in existing build processes, or RAT can be run from the command line.
