Started as a research project in 2007 at VMware, Apache Pivot, the framework for Rich Internet Applications, became an Apache top level project almost a year ago, and the Pivot developers have now completed version 2.0. Pivot allows the creation of applications in Java or JVM-compatible languages such as JavaScript, Groovy and Scala, which run either as a browser applet or as a locally installed application.

Seventeen demonstration programs on a demo site (requires Java 6 or greater installed) show the possibilities of Pivot, and the program itself can be obtained from the Pivot download web page under the Apache License v 2.0.

The developers include dynamic data binding, CSS-like style classes, support for vector graphics in SVG format and improved text components, among the major innovations in Pivot 2.0.
