Apache POI Logo After nearly 11 months of development, the Apache POI developers have released version 3.7 of their open source Java library for reading and writing Microsoft document formats. According to developer Yegor Kozlov, the latest update is an incremental feature release based on the previous 3.6 version from December of last year, which included significant memory and performance improvements when dealing with spreadsheet formats.

For Excel spreadsheets, initial support for auto-filters and themes for Microsoft's OOXML format have been added, as well as support for data validation and numerous cell data formatter improvements. Several new functions have also been added. The 3.7 release can now read AES encrypted / write-protected OOXML files and adds support for text extraction from XSLF tables. Other changes include SlideShow updates, Document changes, such as initial support for the HWPF revision marks authors list, overall performance improvements and various bug fixes.

More details about the release can be found in the official release announcement and in the change log. At the time of this posting, the release notes have yet to be updated. Licensed under version 2.0 of the Apache License, Apache POI 3.7 is available to download from the project's site.
