Apache POI , the open source Java library for reading and writing Microsoft document formats, has been updated to version 3.6. The new release offers significant memory savings and improved performance when dealing with spreadsheet formats. According to the developers, when generating data, POI 3.6 uses "200 per cent less memory" than previous versions. When recalculating formulas, the developers have incorporated lazy evaluation to improve performance, sometimes as much as 700 per cent, but do note that "your results may vary".

Other enhancements include the addition of a "lite" version of the OOXML schemas which can reduce POI's footprint by 10MB, full support for cell comments in spreadsheets and the bundling of example code for using POI, including XLS2CSV (Excel to CSV) and PPT2PNG (PowerPoint to PNG) converters. The full details of the changes made are detailed in the change log and the Apache licensed source code and binaries are available to download.
