The Apache Harmony developers have released version 5.0, milestone nine, of their open source implementation of the Java Standard Edition, under the umbrella of the Apache Software Foundation. The new milestone release is considered stable and contains performance and functionality enhancements. The release fixes numerous bugs and also includes several new features. More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Apache Harmony milestone nine is available to download.

The Harmony Project, announced in May of 2005, publishes an open source version of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and the required class library under the Apache License v2. Harmony now contains the working code, including Swing, Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) and Java 2D contributed by Intel. It has been a top level Apache project since October of 2006 and is backed heavily by IBM.
