Apache Cassandra 0.6 released
Apache's Cassandra, the "NoSQL" distributed data store, has been updated to version 0.6, adding support for Apache Hadoop, integrated caching and improved performance. The Hadoop support allows Cassandra based systems to use the MapReduce framework to run analyses on data stored within Cassandra. Cassandra 0.6 has removed the need for a separate caching layer, replacing it with a new integrated row cache. According to the Cassandra developers this change simplifies the architecture and along with other performance enhancements, boosts the overall performance of Cassandra by 30%.
Originally developed by Facebook, Cassandra was submitted to the Apache Software Foundation's Incubator in 2009. In February, it was promoted from the incubator to become an Apache top level project. Cassandra offers a high availability, decentralised and scalable data store which has been put into use with sites such as Digg, Reddit, Twitter, Cisco's WebEx, CloudKick and Rackspace. Cassandra implements an "eventually consistent" model which trades-off consistency of data stores in the system for availability. Cassandra is licensed under the Apache Software License 2.0 and is available to download from cassandra.apache.org.
