Apache Camel to add WebSocket and Twitter

Two new components for using the WebSocket protocol and accessing Twitter will be introduced with the upcoming 2.10 update of the Apache Camel integration framework. With the WebSocket component, developers will get endpoints capable of exchanging messages with other WebSocket using programs. The planned Twitter component (based on the Twitter4J Java library) allows users to read and publish posts on the popular messaging platform.

A preview of the new features was already presented in February, at the Jfokus 2012 Java conference in Sweden. An updated version of the example used in Claus Ibsen and James Strachan's presentation there is now available on Ibsen's blog; their example takes real time results of a Twitter query and publishes them to web page using WebSockets.

Apache Camel is a framework that allows services and resources to be brought together in various Enterprise Integration Patterns and is available as a download under the Apache 2 licence. The project's website has an overview of version 2.10, including bug fixes and planned features.
