Following the announcement that Google would be shutting down its Knol project for user-written articles, the company has worked with Solvitor and Crowd Favorite to create Annotum. Based on WordPress, Annotum is an open source authoring and publishing platform for scholarly works.

The Annotum project set out with two objectives: firstly to develop a robust and easy to use authoring system for creating scholarly articles, and secondly, to create a system that allows users to submit, review and publish those articles.

Built on the WordPress platform, Annotum is available as a theme on the free WordPress.com blog hosting site, as a free Annotum Base theme from WordPress.org, and it can be downloaded from github as GPLv2 licensed source code. The Annotum developers have created a rich text editor using a version of the TinyMCE editor which enforces a subset of National Library of Medicine (NLM) journal publishing tag set. They have also added support for multiple authors, import/export in XML/HTML and PDF formats, internationalisation and review workflow.

Knol was launched by Google in 2007 with the aim of improving web content by enabling people to collaborate on articles. It is not the only project that has reached the end of its life at Google – other projects that are being closed down include Google Search Timeline, Google Bookmarks Lists, and Google Wave. Knol will continue to work as usual until 30 April 2012 and, after that date, users will have until 1 October 2012 to download their Knols to a file or migrate them to WordPress.com. After 30 April 2012 though, Knols will no longer be viewable.
