Android to be Chrome plated?

Android, Google's open source platform for smart phones, may find its browser covered in Chrome in future releases, according to an interview in CNET News.com with Google founder Sergey Brin.

According to Brin, Android's browser and Chrome were developed separately and Google's management didn't want to tie the projects together too closely. Now Chrome is out in the open, Brin says "Probably a subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack".

Both browsers share a common renderer in Webkit, the Apple-enhanced variant of KHTML, but Android's browser could adopt the V8 JavaScript Engine relatively easily. The rest of Chrome's stack may take longer; the Linux port of Chrome is in its early days and lacks a user interface layer. With Android 1.0 expected before the end of the year, any major changes to the Android browser would probably be deferred to 2009.
