MIPS Logo Like ARM, MIPS is not a processor manufacturer, but rather a seller of (ARM incompatible) processor designs, which have, up to now, been used largely in the embedded field. An Android port aimed primarily at set-top boxes has been in the works for some time, however plans are now afoot for the first mobile device. At last week's Computex PC trade show taking place in Taiwan, MIPS, together with mobile phone specialist SySDSoft, has announced an implementation of the LTE mobile telephony standard for MIPS processors. This is explicitly aimed not at the router side, but rather at 4G Android smartphones. According to Digitimes, the first model should be on the market by next year – MIPS is declining to give further details.

MIPS has also announced multi-processor support for the Android port (the ARM port has itself only offered this since February) and explicitly names smartphones as the beneficiaries of this development. MIPS now wants to get Adobe's Flash 10.1 running under MIPS Android.

Additionally, MIPS announced a new chip for mobile devices. SiS plans to use the MIPS32 74K core, which is capable of running at more than 1 GHz, together with Imagination's PowerVR SGX graphics core in a system-on-a-chip (SoC) specifically for Android mobile internet devices such as smartphones and tablets.
