Android gets a PowerPC port
Mentor Graphics has completed an initial port of Google's open source Android mobile operating system to Freescale's PowerPC processor architecture. According to LinuxDevices, Freescale Semiconductor is "now accepting orders for a hardware / software platform for developing Android applications on Power Architecture PowerQUICC and QorIQ processors".
The project, initially began by Linux development firm Embedded Alley Solutions, which Mentor Graphics bought in late July, will initially be targeting products for industrial networking, storage and media equipment markets. Interestingly, Freescale specifically mentions industrial equipment, touch screen interfaces for system controls and multi-function printer applications for the mobile Linux-based OS.
Freescale and Mentor Graphics will be holding a one-hour web seminar at 10:00 AM Central time (CST). The seminar will cover topics including accelerating Android application development and registration is free. More details about the MPC8536 Android Development Kit (ADK) is available on Freescale's website.
