Android client for ownCloud released

The ownCloud Android application running under Android 4.0.4

The ownCloud developers have announced the release of their Android client. The application runs on Android versions of 2.3.6 and higher and is currently optimised for phone form factors. Basic functionality such as uploading and downloading of files as well as creation of directories on the server is already implemented. Users can also browse and delete files on the server.

Version 1.0 of the application is currently only available via a direct APK file download as the software is still under development. According to the announcement, the developers expect it to be available from Google's Play store in four to six weeks. An iOS app should also be available within the same time frame. Users who want commercial support for the application can purchase a subscription to the Business or Enterprise editions of ownCloud 2012.

ownCloud is a file synchronisation and backup service that allows users to set up a server to store and sync their data from multiple computers and devices. To use the Android client, users will either have to provide an ownCloud 2012 server themselves or purchase a hosted instance of the software. A test server is also available and can be used with the Android application after creating a user and assigning a password via the web interface.

The ownCloud Android app is licensed under the AGPLv3 licence and its source code is available on Gitorious. More information about version 1.0 of the software can be found in the official release notes.
