Android Developer Challenge 2 kicks off

Google has officially opened its second Android Developer Challenge for submissions. This year, a total of nearly $2 million in prize money will be up for grabs in ten application categories, including Education, Games, Lifestyle and Entertainment. Awards of $100,000, $50,000 or $25,000 will be given for the top three programs in each of the ten categories. Three overall awards spanning all of the categories will also be awarded with an additional $150,000, $50,000 or $25,000.

According to a post on the Android Developers blog, the applications submissions for Google's open source mobile operating system may only use published APIs because some users may be judging applications on new, unreleased phones that don't support unpublished APIs. Applications that were previously made publicly available in the Android Market prior to August 1, 2009, are not eligible.

More details about the Android Developer Challenge 2, including rules and eligibility, are available on the Android Developer Challenge web page. All entries are required to be in English, run on Android 1.5 and must be in by 11:59:59pm Pacific Time on the 31st of August, 2009.
