Amazon launches developer programme for Android software

Amazon's Android app store is likely to open in the near future. On the developer portal, developers can now register to join the programme and receive their first year of membership free of charge. After that, the annual fee will be $99. Amazon plans to pass 70% of an app's sale price, or 20% of its "list price", to the developers, whichever is greater.

This arrangement is necessary because, although developers determine a list price for their apps, Amazon can freely decide the price at which it will offer the product in its store. The company's criteria for suitable applications are quite vague. Pornography and other illegal activities as well as "offensive content" are prohibited. Amazon's FAQ says "What we deem offensive is probably about what you would expect. We reserve the right to determine the appropriateness of all apps and to accept or reject any app at our discretion".

Amazon will initially only sell to US customers. Developers from other countries can register, but they will need to deal with tax matters and practical considerations. For instance, Amazon only pays companies outside the US when their balance due exceeds $100, and it will pay by paper cheque. In certain circumstances, taxes due in the US may reduce profits.
