Amarok logo The Amarok development team has published the first beta of version 2.6 of its open source music player. Developer Myriam Schweingruber says that the project is seeking additional users to test the beta release, provide feedback, and report any bugs they find so that they can be addressed before the final version arrives.

Amarok 2.6 will be a major update that adds support for transcoding when copying tracks to iPod-like and USB Mass Storage devices, and will include "a complete overhaul" of iPod and iOS support. The Free Music Chart service from Archive.org is now activated by default and Amazon MP3 store integration has received improvements, such as better album search. The developers also note that version 2.6 includes a database update which "can take up to a few minutes to complete". The final release is scheduled to arrive in mid-June.

Further information about the beta, including a full list of bug fixes, can be found in the announcement blog post and in the change log. Amarok 2.6 beta 1 is available to download as a source tarball; instructions for building Amarok from the tarball are provided on Compiling page on the Amarok Wiki. The developers note that additional download options should be added later. The current stable release is Amarok 2.5 from December 2011.
